Philip Thomas Vanderford, principal and founder of Dallas-based Studio Thomas James, has cultivated an internationally recognized portfolio of interiors—each one a bespoke expression of its owner’s lifestyle, sensibilities, and ambitions. Eschewing the constraints of a “signature look,” Vanderford and his team approach every commission as a couture-level collaboration, resulting in spaces that feel profoundly personal yet universally sophisticated.
A graduate of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design at the University of Arkansas, Vanderford also apprenticed under his grandfather, a master craftsman, machinist, and woodworker, gaining an uncommon, tactile understanding of how enduring beauty is made. This foundation is evident in the studio’s work: interiors that exude an effortless calm while revealing layers of artisanal detail, couture-level precision, and uncompromising execution.
Chase directs the firm’s operational strategy and leads all project installations with precision and discretion. He oversees logistics, scheduling, and on site coordination, ensuring that every design is executed seamlessly and to the studio’s exacting standards. His role is essential in translating concept into a refined and fully realized environment.
Kaky oversees all material and furnishing selections across the studio, shaping interiors that are layered, cohesive, and editorially resolved. Her work balances refinement with edge, bringing depth, texture, and intention to each project. She ensures every selection supports the broader architectural and design narrative.
Michelle leads all interior architectural drawings and detailing, anchoring the studio’s work in technical rigor and precision. She develops and resolves architectural elements with clarity, ensuring millwork, stone, and structural details are seamlessly integrated. Her oversight guarantees a cohesive dialogue between architecture and interior design.
Delaney supports design development across materials, drawings, and furnishings, contributing to both concept and execution. She works closely with the leadership team to refine details and maintain consistency throughout each project. Her role reinforces the studio’s commitment to thoughtful, layered, and enduring interiors.
Alyssa manages all purchasing, ordering, and expediting, overseeing schedules, logistics, and delivery timelines. She ensures that every component is procured accurately and arrives as specified. Her attention to detail supports the smooth progression of projects from approval through installation.
Celeste oversees all client facing quotations and pricing coordination for furnishings and finishes. She serves as a primary point of contact, ensuring transparency, accuracy, and consistency throughout the design process. Her role provides clarity and structure at every financial and approval stage.
Lauren oversees all accounting and financial operations for the studio, managing reporting, vendor coordination, and internal systems. She ensures financial clarity, stability, and operational integrity across all projects. Her oversight supports the firm’s continued growth and long-term success.
Recognized as a sought-after voice in the design world, Vanderford made his Kips Bay debut at the inaugural Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas in 2020 and returned as a participating designer for Kips Bay Palm Beach in 2023 and Kips Bay Dallas in 2025. In 2024, he created a showstopping tablescape for the New York Botanical Garden’s Orchid Dinner at The Plaza, an event celebrated as one of the design industry’s most distinguished evenings.
In 2025, the studio’s work was published in /be-spōk/: a philosophy of beauty, a luxury coffee table book celebrating exquisitely curated spaces from around the world, and Vanderford was appointed a Donghia ambassador. Most recently, Studio Thomas James was selected to design a multi-million-dollar luxury residential collection in collaboration with SHM Architects, set to debut in Dallas’ coveted Knox District.
